Company History

Here at Towens we are proud of our history and record in waste management and construction services, our association with Weston Super Mare its businesses, council and residents.

Modern waste management was pioneered in WSM by Ron & Sylvia Smith who started their business Smiths of Weston in 1957. They progressed into the collection and disposal of waste from their depot in Winterstoke Road tipping everything up until 1982 on the Council tip nearby. Andy Towens joined Smiths in 1979 as a manager following 14 years as a Royal Navy submariner.

Ron & Sylvia Smith retired in 1987 and Peter and Judy Telling formerly of the HAT  group and later MITIE took over. After a rapid expansion the business was aquired by Leigh Environmental a division of Leigh Interests Plc at that time the largest waste management company in Europe and the Tellings and Towens went their separate ways.

Mainarea Ltd trading as Towens of Weston began on 14th July1992 from a small yard on the Weston Europark. We did pretty much anything in the early days, except skips as Andy was not permitted to compete with Leigh under the terms of his severance. At this time Woodspring District were very supportive finding various civil engineering works for us to carry out.

In 1994 Towens merged with C-T plant owned by the Telling’s and the operation was moved to a small depot on Rectors way. In 1997 we purchased two plots of land in Warne Road, moved in and began the skip side of the business.

Soon after the millennium we were able to purchase some of the old Hutton Moor allotment land which backed onto our plot and it is this site that we occupy today.

In 2002 following 8 years of steady growth Mainarea Ltd  changed to the two operating companies Towens of Weston Ltd and Towens Waste Management Ltd that you see today.

We handle well over half a million tonnes of waste and recycled aggregate per year and have developed the site into a fully functioning trade waste processing and recycling facility. You are welcome to visit us by arrangement for a tour of our site.
